Congo Ebola outbreak passes 5,000 cases as response grows

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization says the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be contained within three months if the response receives enough resources. Official figures through Aug. 16 showed 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths. The outbreak has spread across six provinces and 55 health zones. Its case fatality rate stands at about 47%. The toll has made it the deadliest Ebola outbreak recorded in the country.

WHO incident manager Thierno Baldé said the containment timeline depends on maintaining enough staff, supplies and operational support. The response has received about $69.3 million of the $115 million required. Health teams added more than 400 treatment beds during a two-week period. They also deployed 100 additional epidemiologists and more than 500 community health workers. Those workers support surveillance, contact tracing, case detection and referrals. The response also requires ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies and trained personnel across affected areas.

Transmission has reached Bas-Uélé, making it the sixth province affected by the outbreak. Ituri remained the main center of transmission in mid-August and accounted for most confirmed cases and deaths. Health officials said many newly detected infections had no known link to existing patients. That gap has increased the importance of faster case finding and contact monitoring. Teams have expanded surveillance to identify infections earlier and move patients into treatment centers as quickly as possible.

    Response expands across affected provinces

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare declared the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory testing confirmed Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses that cause Ebola disease. The country has now recorded 17 Ebola outbreaks since the virus was first identified in 1976. Uganda has also recorded cases linked to the broader outbreak. Health authorities there reported 20 confirmed infections and two deaths, with no new case reported after June 21.

There is currently no licensed vaccine or approved specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical care therefore centers on early diagnosis, supportive treatment, infection prevention and rapid contact tracing. Health teams also conduct safe burials and community outreach to reduce further transmission. Local workers help identify suspected cases and direct patients to treatment centers. Officials have supplied hygiene materials and trained personnel in affected communities. Early supportive care remains an important part of treatment for people who develop Ebola symptoms.

Surveillance and funding remain central to containment

Contact monitoring improved during August but remained below public health targets in some affected areas. By Aug. 12, response teams were following 17,460 of 20,740 listed contacts, equal to about 84%. Additional field epidemiologists have joined efforts to improve detection and shorten delays between symptoms and treatment. Community health workers also report suspected infections and connect patients with clinical care. Health workers have faced significant exposure during the outbreak, with more than 150 infections recorded among medical personnel by early August.

The outbreak was designated a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17. National authorities and international health partners continue laboratory testing, clinical care, surveillance, safe burials and community engagement. The latest weekly figures showed hundreds of additional confirmed cases and deaths compared with the previous reporting period. Baldé said the three-month containment assessment depends on securing the resources needed to sustain those operations. Health teams also continue working in areas affected by insecurity and disruptions to medical services.
